Kero Kero Bonito is a bi-lingual band that perform in English and Japanese. Deerhoof’s “#81” showed us that the two cultures can mix successfully to create addictive songs and my introduction to KKB: “Sick Beat” also proves likable with a Lily Allen style of singing about being a tomboy: “It’s often said I should get some girly hobbies instead”, she exclaims.
The Japanese-English switch can be rather annoying and unorganised on the rest of the album, which is random, lazy, sickly and even occasionally too childish for story time on Cbeebies. The best examples of this is “Babies (Are So Strange)” and “My Party". On Cat vs Dog, she states “I’ll bite you in the head until your dead/brains everywhere but I won’t care” shows the tasteless side to their poetry, and they also attempt to add swear words to convince us that it’s actually for grown-up adults.
At best they sometimes sound like The Ting Tings merged with Denmark’s Oh No Ono but that’s being kind. I’m all for playfulness but to the extent of musical’s integrity being trampled on, I am not. Unbearable. MTH
