On the surface of it through the CD Covers, Photoshoots and the name of the band, Bombay Royale seem like they would be another energetic Indian troupe playing out to a particular audience of Bollywood Beloveds. There’s more to them than that Bollywood Bashers that make Indian-style bond music. Firstly they hail from Australia and not all members are Indian, infact the band was conceived by vanilla skinned saxophonist.
Taking it’s name as a homage to 1896 H.G Wel’s novel “The Island of Doctor Moreau”, this is incredibly fun and enjoyable making the listener impulsively shake and groove. It is easy to think that the concept might wear thin in a 12 track collection but instead it constantly surprises and thrills. This is their sophomore album though and they tweaked their inconsistencies following up from the success of their debut which lead to a Glastonbury appearance in 2013.
“The Bombay Twist” makes me think of a Punjabi flavoured B52s and “Gyara 59” is a Taratino soundtrack shaking hands with the theme from Jean de la Florette. “Henna Henna” has a 1960s Mexican sitcom spice, the titular “The Island of Doctor Electrico” walks like Shaft and “Wild Stallion Mountain” is Chic territory all over. These descriptions giving you a brief taste of the addictive diversity on show. MTH
