Jump Blues

Characteristics/Symptoms

  • Is an uptempo form of blues music

  • Usually played by small groups and featuring horns

  • It was a genre that preceeded rhythm and blues

  • There was a renewed interest in the genre during the 1990s swing revival

  • Typical instruments include: saxophone, brass instruments, rhythm guitar, piano, acoustic bass (double bass), drums

  • Blues and jazz were part of the same world and there were many musicians in both genres

  • Jump Blues appear at the same time as the boogie woogie revival

  • Jump groups will willingly to perform for jitterbugs (a dance craze) for a much lower price and became popular with agents and ballroom owners

  • The music's motto and mentality was "playing for the people" and blues and jazz musicians who shared that belief started creating a heavy insistent beat that could be danced to

  • The genre was appealing for black musicians who didn't want to be identified with "life down home"

  • The Hampton (Lionel Hampton) band were pioneers of the genre, who combined the popular boogie-woogie rhythm, a gritter version of swing-era saxophones but with playful and humorous lyrics.

  • Bands felt insulted if the audience didn't dance to their music

  • They have a bright bounce that makes it hard to stand still. A critic at Billboard described it as a jumper and that's where the name comes from.

  • Hot beats in an unrelenting style (constant, stubborn, inaffectionate and non-balladry)

  • Unusually swingy side
