The Hampton (Lionel Hampton) band were pioneers of the genre, who combined the popular boogie-woogie rhythm, a gritter version of swing-era saxophones but with playful and humorous lyrics.

They have a bright bounce that makes it hard to stand still. A critic at Billboard described it as a jumper and that's where the name comes from.
